Ela Emmett has recently been appointed as a Senior Manager, Financial Crime Controls, Risks and Policy & Advisory within the Compliance function at ICBC Standard Bank.
In her previous role with Commerzbank AG London, she led the AML Monitoring and Investigation team and acted as Fraud Officer for the London Branch, leading the Anti-Fraud Programme and ensuring oversight and implementation of the respective local and global governance. She was responsible for managing complex investigations across different business platforms and critical input in developing anti-financial crime policies, procedures, measures, and controls. While at Commerzbank, Ela closely interacted with the Joint Money Laundering Task Force (JMLIT), enabling the Bank to contribute to live investigations.
Before joining Commerzbank in 2018, Ela served in a similar investigative role at Citibank NA for over ten years, gaining experience in financial crime, including fraud investigations and AML.
Ela holds a Master`s degree in Criminal Studies from the University of Portsmouth, Institute of Criminal Justice Studies and achieved several other financial crime-related certifications, i.e., ACAMS, ACFE and ECCP.
At the beginning of her career, Ela had the opportunity to train with the Analysis Training Unit at Greater Manchester Police and attended several training courses with the City of London Police to develop knowledge on a comprehensive range of financial crime topics across the spectrum from foundation level to industry experts.

This work supports our colleagues and clients to manage financial crime risks and to protect our customers and the bank. Alex has spent his career collaborating with and within a range of cross-sector organisations and law enforcement, on initiatives that support our collective ability to access the right information and infrastructure to minimise the harmful impact of crime on economies and societies. With over 20 years of experience, Liliya has worked across the financial crime space in different roles and capacity and across different business segments. She has managed teams, due diligence projects in challenging environments, and led major investigations and litigation support cases. In the late 1990s she joined Bulgaria’s Financial Intelligence Unit where she headed the International Contacts and Legal Coordination department. Her experience also includes Transparency International in Berlin, several London-based investigative consultancy firms and the Royal Bank of Canada in London. In 2016 she joined Commerzbank London where she managed the AML Advisory and EDD Team until her appointment as head of Transactions Monitoring and Investigations/UK FIU and deputy MLRO. In 2020 she joined Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank as Head of UK Financial Security; she is also the MLRO. She holds a doctorate in AML policies from Tilburg University in the Netherlands and gives lectures at the University of Manchester. A speaker at industry events, Liliya has delivered presentations on behalf of Stop the Traffik, a London-based non-profit organisation that fights human trafficking and slavery.

Over that period he has held a variety of roles spanning global businesses in both wealth management and investment banking. He has deep subject matter expertise covering investigations into financial crime matters, managing AML, anti-fraud, anti-bribery and corruption and high risk client controls and processes as well as testing and providing assurance on anti-financial crime controls, and leading on remediation and read across exercises. Before moving into Financial Services, Jim headed up the Intelligence Analysis roles at Northumbria Police (Principal Intelligence Analyst) and worked as a Senior Intelligence Analyst at the National Criminal Intelligence Service (prior to inception of NCA). Adam has over 30 years’ experience in Legal and Compliance. His journey into banking is atypical in that he has spent most of his career as a trial lawyer and has, by his estimate, more than 1,000 trials under his belt. From 1987 until 1999 he practised as a barrister in what was then the Midland and Oxford Circuit, specialising in commercial and chancery matters. He then moved to the US and requalified as an attorney. In the US, he had a national practice with an increasing focus on white collar crime and financial services. He joined BNY Mellon’s Legal Department in 2015 and, after a brief return to private practice in 2019, joined EMEA Compliance in 2020.
